Ever since I can remember, I have loved Dr. Seuss books. The quirky humor, the colorful images, the life lessons, they’re some of my all-time favorite books. I’ve also loved gifting Dr. Seuss books for baby showers, birthday parties, and special occasions and I’ve read pretty much all his books except for this one until recently! After reading it, it makes total sense that “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!” has been a bestseller every single year around graduation season. Whether Pre-K or college, it’s a go-to graduation gift.
I happened to come across this book last week when I read online about a heartwarming story of a girl who had received this book from her dad on her high school graduation day and when she opened the book, she found inside personal notes written by all of her teachers who taught her while she was growing up. Her dad had asked all of her teachers to write in that book every year and kept it all a secret from his daughter for 13 years! Needless to say, I teared up reading that story and now want to do the same for Joey!
So I grabbed a copy recently and read through the book and it made me tear up! It captures the meaning of graduation in a nutshell, providing such great words of wisdom for people embarking on the next phase of life’s journey. I especially love the quote in book, “On and on you will hike. And I know you’ll hike far and face up to your problems whatever they are.” Wish I had read this book when I was growing up because it would’ve encouraged me so much. I’m just so glad that I know now so that I can gift it to both Joey and Casey. I’m planning on carrying out the same tradition for them, starting with Joey except I’m going to start it off by writing in it every year as well because writing letters to my daughters is something I absolutely love doing.
While I was writing a note for Joey, she snuck in and wanted to know what I was doing so I read her the book and she loved it! Her first Dr. Seuss book! I can’t wait to start this tradition with her first teacher and continue every year until she graduates high school.
I absolutely love traditions like these that can last lifetimes. If you’re like me and haven’t read this book already, go get a copy and read it and gift it to the beloved children in your life!

I just brought the book to start this tradition for my last grandchild, Ava Michelle. I read the story on Facebook about the dad giving the book to his daughter and it brought tears to my eyes. I love your work idea of writing also. I just hope I’m around to see her receive the book
